About Us

STARBASE is a DOD-sponsored activity hosted by the Air National Guard at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. STARBASE students (fifth graders) participate in an inquiry-based curriculum with “hands-on/minds-on” experiential activities in the fields of science, math, technology, and engineering. They will have an opportunity to see how these academic areas are important as they interact through on-base excursions to various work centers on McEntire JNGB. Teamwork and goal setting are also a constant theme as students work together to explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate concepts. We strive to make sure we cover many of the 5th grade science and math state standards in our 25 hours of instruction.

Over the last two years, we have had almost 1500 students successfully complete this program. We have an average increase of about 30% from pre-test to post-test knowledge of our students who attend STARBASE. The instructional program is resourced and sponsored by the Department of Defense and is funded annually through a federal grant to the South Carolina National Guard. The only expense incurred by the school is for bus transportation.

Our Mission

The mission of STARBASE Swamp Fox is to raise the interest and improve the knowledge and skills of program participants (focusing on at-risk youth) in math, science, and technology by exposing them to an exciting, dynamic, technological environment and the positive role models found in military organizations.

Our Vision

The vision of STARBASE Swamp Fox is to build our program into the leading STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education program in South Carolina on the elementary education level and to become one of the leading STARBASE programs nationwide.

Our Purpose

The purpose of STARBASE Swamp Fox is to excite students about Science, Math, and Technology, to teach them how to perform on a high level, how to work effectively in teams, and how to avoid common pitfalls which negatively effect performance.
