History
In 2001, Major General Stanhope Spears, Adjutant General of South Carolina, and the South Carolina Air National Guard unveiled STARBASE Swamp Fox, and innovative program for elementary school students sponsored by the Department of Defense.

Named for the famous Swamp Fox squadron based at McEntire Air National Guard Station, Starbase uses pilots and Personel of the South Carolina Air and Army National Guard as teachers, mentors and informal career education counselors. These excellent role models support the program goals of healthy lifestyles, making positive career choices, and avoiding drugs and violence.

Students connect classroom topics to the world around them in the 25-hour STARBASE Academy, by exploring such topics as flight simulation, space exploration, and model rocketry. Students discover fun and exciting ways to learn science, math, technology, and problem solving skills with hand-on experiments
