STARBASE Swamp Fox Summer Camp A Blast (Off)!
STARBASE Swamp Fox hosted a summer day camp for National Guard dependents and other students from the community this past summer (6-10 July 2009) at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. The camp was open to students in grades 4-6. Students were exposed to the core elements of the DoD STARBASE academic curriculum normally provided during the school year in a STARBASE Academy. Lt Col Jim Hiott, Deputy Director of STARBASE Swamp Fox, served as the camp’s director.
In addition to the academics, students were treated to numerous activities, including trips to the air traffic control tower, base operations & maintenance facilities, and the South Carolina Military Department’s museum. A special treat included a visit to nearby Fort Jackson’s “Palmetto Falls” for a picnic lunch and various water park activities. Lt Col Hiott enlisted a number of teenage volunteers who assisted with the camp. Many of these junior counselors were past camp or STARBASE Academy graduates.
The week ended with a “blast” as students launched their rockets at the base’s recreational pond site. Parents and other guests joined the group for the end of camp festivities. The 169th Fighter Wing’s Vice Commander, Col Deane “D-Dawg” Pennington, spearheaded graduation. Colonel Pennington encouraged students to chase their dreams and set their goals high in life.
